Family adopts beautiful brindle puppy that vet deems "dangerous" based on wild hunch, leaving family confused and seeking answers

We've said it before, and we'll say it again. There are no "bad dogs", only bad owners.

Every dog has different needs to feel safe, calm, and secure. Even different dogs within the same breed have different needs. One golden retriever might be a bursting ball of energy and need constant stimulation in order not to chew up your whole house, whereas their sister might just want to sleep all day. Border collies will have very different needs from French bulldogs, for example. If you don't mentally tire out your border collie daily with obedience training, games, and puzzles, you'll have a dog that has too much energy and no way of dealing with it. If you tried to do all of those things with a French bulldog, you wouldn't even manage to get through the first step without them overheating and passing out. 

All of this is to say that if the pawrent truly understands their doggo and its needs, there is no reason for any dog to be deemed "dangerous". The most dangerous dogs are the ones that are untrained and put in situations where they are not equipped to deal with the situation at hand. So, for this family's vet from Reddit's r/IDmydog community to call their puppy "dangerous" because it could be a temperamental breed, we're more than skeptical - we're already on our way out to find a new vet. 

Vets, more than anyone, should understand the importance of proper training and stimulation when it comes to dogs' temperaments. Some dogs are reactive, and no matter of training will stop it, but there is a lot you can do on the human side to make it very livable. We know. We have a highly reactive dog at home and we've lived a great life with her. It hasn't been easy, but it is possible. However, it is not the right fit for every family or lifestyle; this is something the family will have to understand for themselves.

    Hi! We've just adopted our second dog, he was the last one to be rehomed out of a pack of 7 (We got told no one wanted it since it wasn't single coloured...).

    Our vet is telling us that this could possibly be a mix of 'Argentine Dogo', Mastiff and another one we're forgetting now; which would classify it as potentially dangerous.

  • Dangerous? The only thing “dangerous” about that puppy is how cute it is. Those eyes are so cute that we would do anything for them. Rob banks, plot the world's destruction, you name it. That's why it's dangerous, and not for any other reasons.

    We're not really keen on his veredict so we kinda wanted to know other people's opinions, after all, it'll make the type of training it's given different (And we're also not super happy to have to restrict the dog in terms of how he interacts with other dogs and stuff, since they told us he'll have to get a muzzle and whatnot).   • Ah, what a frightening sploot! Run for cover! Seriously, though, it's time to get a new vet. This one doesn't seem like they will care for this puppy well as it gets older.

    ForLark We had a vet ask us once if our 187 pound Irish Wolfhound was a wolf. Don't depend on a vet to evaluate a mixed breed. (Yes we switched.)

    DarkTracy554 Looks like a mixture of pitbull and mastiff type breeds. The vet may have meant breeds defined as dangerous by homeowners. insurance companies, since many of them will not cover incidents with pitbulls or dogo (doesn't look anything like a dogo).

    RecordingCrazy4082 for some reason i've noticed that vets are horrible at identifying breeds. It would be incredibly rare for your dog to be part dogo. They look pit/gsd rn

    birdeer Really hard to tell at this age, but the only thing that could make me think mastiff is the brindle. Other than that, this dog looks like dog. Seek a new vet, they're being weird.

    Dragonflykid02 Statistically it's a pit/bu y breed mix, depending on your housing situation you may or may not want to get him DNA testing to find out exactly what he is (sometimes it's not a good idea if you live somewhere with breed restrictions)

    xCoalchaser Beautiful pup! I love brindle so much. Looks like it might have some shepherd and pit in it but really hard to say this young. I'd definitely get a new vet.

    Buddy-Sue Do your own research. Get an Embark DNA test. Love and train that beautiful dog and oh.....get a new vet!! Mastiff's are great BTW!

    RedHeelRaven It appears your vet has a bias. I'd get another vet because if he is trying to frighten you about this puppy, I don't expect he'd give the dog good care as the dog gets bigger.
